I have always used Craft Smart Acrylic Paints for this project. I had these paints on hand the very first time and they are the only material that I still use from my first footprint art when Little A was 3 months old. We were lucky to get footprints we were happy with on the first try. It really helps to have two people when doing this project, although it’s possible to do it with one. Christina held Caleb while I used the paintbrush to paint the bottom of his foot. Then, while Christina held Caleb, I gently pressed his painted foot onto the paper, which was resting on a table.
I tried thicker canvases at first, but these are nice and flat. This makes them easy to frame if desired and they fit nicely on a canvas holder to display. They are also more sturdy across the whole thing, important when pushing a little foot onto it. The activities shared on this blog require adult supervision at all times. You know which activities are appropriate for your children and/or the children under your care and are responsible for those children's safety.
And bonus, it doubles as a memento and a card, so you can add a sweet little message to mom or grandma. Press firmly and evenly against the canvas, which should be laid flat on whatever surface you are working on. Then prompt remove the foot, lifting straight off the canvas to avoid smudging. Once you think you have the perfect impression you can add some personal items around the print like sea shells or lettered beads with your child’s name. If you are not fond of the results simply pop out the mold and start again. Once you have the frame, the sand and the plaster, it is easy to get another print.
